Slime is very likely a favorite toy of yours or someone who roams around your house quite often. What can we say, this gooey and stretchy paddle of joy took over people’s hearts all over the world. Slime stuck in the carpet

Vinegar, carpet cleaner, dish soap, and alcohol are your very best friends in your battle with slime. To clean the mess up, arm yourself up with a little TLC, a lot of patience, and the right cleaning solutions. To make the process slightly more comfortable, add to your slime-free equipment kit the following: a sturdy scrub brush (you can substitute it with a toothbrush that you no longer use), and paper towels. Even if the slime has dried up, you can get it out with or without a spot scrubber.

  1. First of all, try to scrape up most of the slime; the less you leave for the cleaning solution the more efficient it can do its job. We recommend you use a spatula, a butter knife, or you can deal with it using your fingers only; whichever you prefer.
  2. Second, apply the cleaning solution on the spot with the remaining slime, whether it is dry or not. Give it a moment to sit, about a minute will do.
  3. Then, without pushing the slime into the fibers, be gentle when you scrub your carpet; it is way more difficult to get it out of there. Remove the intruder with a sponge, a rag, some paper towels.
  4. Reapply the cleaning solution and repeat steps 2 and 3 until all the slime is removed.
  5. Get rid of any excess moisture left on the carpet with some paper towels, a clean rag, or a sponge.
  6. Dry your carpet as usual (make sure to dry it thoroughly), and go over it with a vacuum cleaner or a spot cleaner.

The main point is, never panic when the slime accidentally (or on the purpose of someone) hits your carpet. Dry or still wet, slime is possible to be taken out completely. The amount and variety of the tools that you use will depend on the type of the carpet and the amount of the slime, but it’s easy to save your home decor from this vicious paddle. Keep reading and learn more with us about how to remove slime from carpet, we have a bunch of helpful solutions for you.

My carpet mixed with slime

Slime can be home-made or commercial; either way, its nature will not stop it from getting into the carpet. Quick thinking can save you a lot of trouble in case if you saw with your own eyes the catastrophe happening. Having a spot scrubber on hand will make your task relatively easy; but you can manage it with a wagon of patience and a pinch of hard effort.

If you don’t have a spot scrubber and need to clean your carpet by hand, here are some items you will find handy for the procedure:

  • A spatula, or a suitable scrapping substitute
  • A tool for gentle application (we will give techniques that use a spraying bottle, but a sponge can do too)
  • A scrub brush (if you don’t have one, look for an old toothbrush – it can do the same job just fine)
  • An absorbent rag, or some paper towels (we suggest you take an empty bucket for the discharge if you choose the rag)
  • A vacuum cleaner

As we mentioned before, whatever cleaning solution you decided to use, it is best to lift manually as much of the slime as possible, before applying the solution. Once you understand that no more slime can be got out manually, apply some warm water to the slime and the surrounding area (no need to soak the whole carpet in the solution though), and let it sit for some time, 15 to 30 minutes will do. When the timer is out, it’s your turn to scrub the smile off with the scrubbing brush or an old toothbrush to lift it and loosen it from the fibers.

Getting slime out with sponge

If you find the slime in the dried-up state, almost rock-solid, spraying it with some warm water before getting to manual techniques and agitating a bit will ease the removal process; once done, apply the paper towels or a rag. Then you can proceed with the cleaning using the solution as described above, or clean the slime stain with a spot scrubber or vacuum until the result matches your expectations.

How do I get slime out of carpet with rubbing alcohol?

Have we told you to remove as much of slime as possible manually before applying cleansing solutions? The same goes for alcohol too. Be careful not to dig into the carpet’s fibers and not to get the slime even deeper into it. Apply alcohol on the remaining slime and leave it for some time. You can follow it up cleaning with a sponge or cloth to remove the slime. If you decide to vacuum the carpet to conclude the cleaning procedure, let the area dry first.

How to clean slime out of carpet with baking soda?

Baking soda found a bunch of fans thanks for its cleaning capacities, however, it does have one catch – it only works properly in tandem with vinegar. Surely, it can help you remove the slime from the carpet too. But first – preparations: first thing you need scrape it up, second – apply some warm water, and then agitate the area a little bit – all as you have learned already.

Once you are done with the preparations, generously powder baking soda on the area of the “battle” and rub it in gently. Then, spray the soda-covered area with vinegar and enjoy the show as the two substances react. When you think the reaction is over (or at least slowed down enough to not be efficient anymore), get rid of the formed foam together with the slime from the carpet using a paper towel or a dampened rag. Let the carpet dry, and feel free to vacuum it to ensure the successful removal of the in

How to remove slime from carpet using club soda?

Sounds tempting but hardly possible, doesn’t it? Let us reassure you, it can do the job just fine. Don’t forget the preparations (manually removing part of slime and smoothening it with some water), and you are ready to begin. Fill a spray bottle with club soda, it will ensure accurate and gentle application and spritz down all of the slime stains that you can find. Leave it alone there for five minutes or more, then clean the area with paper towels or a rag. Feel free to repeat the procedure if you encounter any difficulties with the slime removal.

The magic trick is that the carbonic acid in club soda breaks the slime and makes it easier to remove. As disastrous as it is for your health when you drink it, used for cleaning club soda can come in quite handy.

How do you get slime out of carpet with hydrogen peroxide?

This magic potion can become an alternative way to your clean carpet, but be careful: hydrogen peroxide has strong bleaching capabilities. We suggest you test patch on the carpet with it before using in such serious mission as removing slime.

Thus, if you have run the test and your carpet fiber reacted normally (or did not react), or if by chance your carpet is white and bleaching is what it has been asking for for a while now, or if the bleached area looks good on the test tissue and now you feel like getting the same one on your carpet too, here is what to do. Take three tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide, then take half of a cup of water, and mix them in the spray bottle. Apply the mixture to the slime and give it at least five minutes to sit. When the time’s up, blot the area with a sponge, or paper towels, or dampened cloth. If you still see some on the slime on the fibers, repeat the process two or more times.

How to clean slime out of carpet with apple cider vinegar?

As you might have understood, many things we store in our kitchens and sometimes use for cooking can help with cleaning too. Apple cider joins our ranks of slime fighters with pride. To activate this hero, mix together 1/3 cup of warm water with 2/3 cup of apple cider (of the same cup) and put the resulting potion in a spray bottle or bucket. Spray the solution on the area affected, wait couple of minutes and use a soft brush to brush the slime away gently.

As in all other cases, we encourage you to wat the are a with a rag and to let it dry before vacuuming the carpet. Also, as previously, if you find some slime remaining in the fibers after the procedure, please feel free to repeat it as many times as you would like.

How to get slime out of a carpet using dish detergent?

Dish detergent is another thing you will surely find in your kitchen that can come in handy in cleaning stuff other than dishes too. To use it on slime, mix together one teaspoon of liquid dish soap and two cups of warm water, then pour the mixture in a spray bottle or bucket (we would insist on spray bottle though since it makes the application more delicate and precise). If you feel like playing hard, you can add some vinegar to your potion to make it stronger (but do not add too much!) before applying the mixture.

After it sits for some time, blot the area with a clean rag, as you did before. You can help yourself with a sponge or a toothbrush to clean it up.

Is dried slime stuck forever in my carpet?

Removing dry slime from the carpet is harder than getting rid of the wet one, but still possible. You have a wide range of instruments to complete the mission: diluted vinegar, a citrus solvent, alcohol, all of them are approximately equally good at removing slime. But since the slime is dry in this case, we recommend you to leave the solution of your choice on the slime stain for at least 15 minutes to do the work. Again, please test the solution on the patch beforehand, so that you make sure to not damage the fibers or the color.

How to get slime out of carpet?
Spraying dry slime

With any of the solutions, as previously, you can use a clean rag to wipe up the slime; ideally, if the chosen solution worked and had enough time to sit, there will be no need to scrub the slime off. You can always reapply the solution if needed as many times as you find useful. Once finished, rinse the rest of the solution off with warm (or hot) water, then blot it dry, leave the carpet to rest and air dry for some time, and vacuum it to get the best result.

All in all, getting slime might look like a complete disaster at the beginning, but it is not a crisis without a solution for you to get stressed about. Even when the case is slightly more complex, with the slime being dried, or sitting there for a long period of time, a proper effort, a tiny piece of chemical magic, and a pinch of patience will do an amazing job helping your remove it.

How do I clean a sheepskin rug?

Sheepskin rugs are indeed perfect pieces to put in your living room or even bedroom to make it look warmer, cozier, and generally home-like. And sure enough, if you are lucky to have already had an encounter with this magnificent decoration before, you must know how easy it is for them to collect all dust and dirt, and how hard it can be for you to clean them off the usual way. We are here on a super important mission – to teach you how to clean sheepskin rug.

There are 6 simple steps you can follow:

  1. Mix water and wool wash product (you may need to vary the amount of the potion depending on how big your rug is, but as standard, we recommend starting with 500 ml of water and a cap’s worth of the wash)
  2. Apply the mixture to all the stains on the rug (please do not waste it on relatively clean spots)
  3. Let the mixture sit for some time, and wash it away with clean water (any remaining residues are to be removed at this stage as well)
  4. Leave the rug in a place away from sunlight and direct heat to get dry
  5. Shortly before the rug gets completely dry, brush it with a wool wire brush (be careful here to not use brutal force to untangle any knots if there are any; your hands will be much more of a help in this situation)
  6. Shake a rug thoroughly, to let it get its fluffiness

This is an optimal way to clean a sheepskin rug – of any shape, size, and color. However, there are many others too. If all this made you wonder about things like “Can I put my rug in the washer?”, or “Can I use stuff like Woolite to clean it?”, or “Is it possible to tumble dry it?”; please keep reading. We will explain how to clean a sheepskin rug without ruining it.

Can I wash my sheepskin rug?

The 6 steps we gave you are perfect to deal with some stains on the rug, however what if the whole piece could use some perking up? Putting it simply, can I hand-wash an entire sheepskin rug?

The answer is: yes, of course, you can! We recommend using a basin for this important mission; it will make the process numerous times easier. Another thing you will need is a wool wire brush to clean sheep skin rug. Do not worry if you have not yet had an opportunity to buy one – there are plenty of these traded on Amazon.

Once you are all armed and ready for adventures, take four liters of warm water and add in it a teaspoon of your wool wash product. Mix it well! And make sure that the water is not warmer than 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Now, fill the basin with the washing mix and soak there your sheepskin rug. Let it sit for half an hour so that the mixture has a proper opportunity to clean the rug thoroughly. Once the time is out, take the rug out of the water and squeeze it hard to get rid of extra water that is left in it. Remember to never wring the rug, it can damage it!

As you already know, sheepskin rug is to be left to line dry away from sunlight and direct heat. To avoid knots and have a nice and fluffy rug, brush it through shortly before it is completely dry and shake it.

Can I machine wash my sheepskin rug?

Indeed, many of us do not have a basin in our apartments waiting for its glory hour to be used to clean sheepskin rugs. So you would not be the only one wondering “Will the washing machine rip the wool in the rug apart, or is it ok to try to clean my rug in it?”

As a rule, a sheepskin rug can stand a machine wash without getting ruined. But remember, once again, the water must not be warmer than 100 degrees, and the amount of wool wash product to be used should not exceed two tablespoons. If you are sure you want to try out this method, make sure to use the gentlest setting.

It is possible that machine wash will not take off all the dirt from your rug; in this case please bring your rug to a professional to get it cleaned for you.

Can I tumble dry my sheepskin rug?

Imagine, your rug appearing from the washing machine all clean and as good as new, together with other gentle pieces of laundry, that go directly to the dryer to get all the hard work to be done by the machine. It should be a great plan for the rug to, shouldn’t it?

As good as it sounds, putting a sheepskin rug in the dryer is a terrible idea. Your least cost of this adventure may be a ruined rug, the biggest… Hard to tell. Like you were told to do in all the previous methods, this time we will tell you once more – line-dry your rug. You can hang it if you want, but it is the only other option than the line-drying that you have. Please remember (and we continue repeating it because it is important) to avoid exposing your rug to sunlight or direct heat while drying it.

Can I vacuum my sheepskin rug?

Sometimes it happens that the rug gets not stained yet, but the dirt on it is accumulating, and it gets quite annoying. And you know, trying to get it out with your hands is going to simply rub in the grid and create the very stains that you will have to wash out. Do you think it is a good idea to let the vacuum cleaner do this job?

As good as it is to be cautious, you can trust most vacuum cleaners with this task; the basic suctioning will not ruin your rug. However, the cleaner should not have an attachment that rotates, since rotating joints possess a threat to the long pieces of fur and may draw them out of the rug. You can clean with the suction head only instead if the attachment of your vacuum cleaner rotates.

A good alternative to this procedure is a simple wool wire brush. You only need to rate it across the length of the rug, and the mess will be dredged up in no time.

Can I wash my sheepskin rug with Woolite?

Even though the Woolite’s FAQs states that Woolite can be applied to a variety of fabrics, and maybe you don’t have any Eucalan handy, which made you wonder if applying Woolite can work on sheepskin. Unfortunately, it does not.

The point is, even the specialized versions on Woolite have enzymes and bleach in their content that can ruin your rug. This is why it is important to avoid the cleaners containing them, including Woolite, or similar detergents, for instance, Tide.

Why we mentioned Eucalan before, you may ask; and we will answer: it is free of enzymes. This means that the wool on the rug is going to stay safe and sound while being washed by hand, in a washer, in a basin.

Can I whiten my sheepskin rug?

Absolutely yes, the good old days when your rug was crystal white and shining can be true once again, even if now it is sullen and has a hint of yellow on. And if a nice wash did not bring back it’s brightness, and you do not want to ruin the wool with the cleansers, don’t worry, there is still a way.

What you have to do here is to look for hydrogen peroxide instead of bleach. Then, we take a sponge, a bucket, and put there some water. We don’t really mind the temperature this time, so you are free to choose whichever feels most comfortable for you to work with. The amount of water should be enough to cover the whole rug in the bucket, but there is no need to fill the vessel to its fullest.

Once the preparations are done, and the rug is sunk in the water, add the hydrogen peroxide in the ration 1:3 (1 unit of water to 3 units of hydrogen peroxide). You can use a cloth or a sponge to rub the rug softly to ensure that the mixture gets thoroughly into the rug. The rug should get way whiter during the procedure, and when you think the color it reached is close enough to its initial color, take your rug out and wash it as you did before, with the steps we provided earlier.

Talking about substitutes to hydrogen peroxide, in case you don’t have a tiny bottle of it at home (if it is the case, we strongly recommend you to get it though, you will find it most handy), go to your kitchen and see if you have any vinegar. Don’t fret about how do you clean a sheepskin rug in this case, the procedure is still just the same: get a bucket, put the rug in, add water and vinegar (a tablespoon of vinegar to 2 cups of water, you do the math).

Of course, there is plenty of colors other than white that a sheepskin rug can have – we are absolutely sure that you can find the one that suits you the best. If you wish to preserve their color, please avoid using hydrogen peroxide for sheepskin rug cleaning.

How do I clean my faux sheepskin rug?

Sure enough, a real sheepskin rug is an expensive deal, and you always can consider getting a fake one. However, we should warn you that for fake sheepskin rugs it is common that the fibers won’t retain their shape when being pulled, according to Hunker. Real wool is also adept in moisture absorption; if you spill some water on it, it still stays warm and pretty dry, especially on underfur level.

All of the methods you learned with us today work well with the fake sheepskin too. In this case, you can also consider cleaning a rug with detergent and cold water in your bathtub.

Let’s sum it up, or “how to wash a sheepskin rug: last words”.

Sheepskin rugs are a great decorative piece that you can use for your home. But they do ask for some nurture and care. When your rug gets stained, dusted, dirty, or sullen, there is a wide variety of ways to clean it quickly and efficiently. All that you have to do is to follow the instructions carefully, make sure you use proper temperature, right substance, correct proportions, and keep the products with bleach away from your rug. If you do so, you will have your sheepskin rug as good as new in no time!

Curtain colors to go with grey walls

Choosing a wall color, people prefer going for something rather neutral that would give them space for creativity. No wonder that grey has been nailing this competition and now is on the top of its game. As it offers different backgrounds for the furnishings – from soft dove greys to deeper charcoals to the in-between greige – the options of decorations are also plentiful, including those for the curtain colors for grey walls. Everything depends on the vibe that you are creating.

Whether you want to roll with the classic curtains to match grey walls or substitute them with a more modern analog, like louver shutter, or combine the two – you simply cannot go wrong if combining them with grey walls. However, some top colors work best with such interior and that are used most frequently. Here, we’ve put them together in the list:

  • Different types of grey
  • Various kinds of whites
  • Shades of blue
  • Tans

You are very encouraged here to unleash your inner designer and set your imagination free. If you do not feel like putting too much effort though, or if you need some kick-start for the inspiration, we collected some wonderful combination examples with curtains for gray walls for you to use.

Sheer white curtains and medium grey walls

You will see, that in most bedrooms that we chose to be an example, there is used a trick where the curtain is hanged from a higher point than the top of the window. This trick gives an illusion of a higher ceiling and enlarges the space, “stretching” it up. Light sheer curtains add the airiness to the overall mood, and together with the light tone of the wall and the carpet, they do a good job making the room elegant and pure. And even relatively dark furniture parts do not weight them down.

Charcoal grey curtains with medium grey walls

The charcoal curtains – whether they are sheer or thick – work as a great contrast to the lighter walls and floor. The choice of their material, as the choice of the furniture, will depend on the vibe that you are creating. Going for something more neutral and classic – darker materials to highlight the contrast and natural colors for the furniture to balance them. Feeling like making something more modern and fun? Add to this grey kingdom a touch of bright color in furniture and decorations: put a purple carpet or a yellow couch (or the two together?) and you are good to go.

Teal curtains next to medium grey walls

In this ensemble, it is beneficial to use the cold tones for both curtains and walls. (Tip: mixing warm and cold tones in any one combination is very thin ice and a hard job, so we recommend you staying within one tone in an ensemble or combining neutral with cold or warm ones). Be ready for the teal curtains to give a colored shade to your walls and make them look slightly blueish. The thick material with deep color will add richness to the general mood. It is beneficial (yet not obligatory) to combine the curtains with the furniture group of the same teal color.

Curtains for medium grey walls

Medium grey curtains together with medium grey walls

This couple is the classic example of monochromatic elegance – simple, yet dignified. And though the color of the curtains for grey room can vary from the color of the walls (even if you do your best job to make them match when putting next to each other) due to the differences of the materials and their thickness, decorate the room with objects of the same soothing grey palette, and you get yourself a calm and peaceful getaway.

Curtains for medium grey walls

Curtains and walls of the same tone

Talking about monochromatic groups, it works for the absolute majority of colors, not just medium grey. This is perfect timing to play with the texture and see what wonderful different shades (and shapes) it creates. Do not be afraid to try something bold – keeping it in one color smoothes down the texture differences so you will find it hard to lose the track.

Curtains for grey walls

Tan curtains and greige walls

Remember we talked about the mixture of cold and warm tones? As tough as this job is, it is not impossible, and this example will show you why. Greige color is on the top of its game now, it works well on both flat and textured surfaces (thus, you can use a brick wall, for instance), and supports well a wide palette of the colors for the furniture. The warm tan of the curtains adds some coziness to the room, you can choose between sheer and thick material, however, if there are many details in the walls and furniture, it is recommended to choose the lighter variant.

Mossy green curtains against blueish grey walls

To bring in some nature vibe to the interior, consider combining blueish walls with greenish curtains (we recommend mossy green since it has already a hint of grey in it and goes well with blueish-grey, imitating sky and woods, but you are always encouraged to experiment and find new fascinating combinations of your own).

Depending on the density of the curtains material, the palette for the furniture will vary: thick curtains bring more color, thus you may want to stick to neutral tones for the furniture, while light sheer curtains do not make the overall look much heavier, so you will have an opportunity to play with the furniture colors more freely.

Curtains for grey walls

Rose grey curtains and rose grey walls

Monochromatic looks can be different, so you do not have to stick to medium grey only. One way to bring life to the room in the monochrome is to add the print – it can be on curtains, can be on walls, can be on furniture or pieces of decoration. Here we suggest a delicate rose grey look for a nice relaxing atmosphere.

Curtains for grey walls

Mustard curtains and green-grey walls

The color of the curtain is constantly interacting with the wall color; depending on the tone and depth, they will influence each other differently. In this case, a bright yellow on the curtains brings up the green hues of the grey walls and makes the space more lively. The curtains used are not sheet, but neither too thick, thus they bring in just the perfect amount of brightness to balance the grey.

Curtains for grey walls

Ocean blue sheer curtains and grey walls

In this simple look, there is not much texture used – the plain grey wall is combined with the blue sheet curtains. However, this simplicity enables us to bring the best out of these two colors and create a simulation of the ocean waves running high against the rocky shore.

Sheer teal curtains and grey walls

We already showed you a way to use teal curtains with grey palette walls – but this time we are doing it with sheer curtains to go with grey walls. If you compare the two (see “Teal curtains next to medium grey walls”), you will see how different the same color looks on the materials of different thicknesses.

Sheer curtains in this ensemble look almost turquoise with big windows full of light behind them. Sheer teal curtains are more playful than solid ones and call for modern decorations and furniture.

Soft grey curtains with textured walls

As we mentioned before, to maintain a great balance of colors and textures, it is best to keep one simple and elaborate on the other one. That said if you introduce many different colors, do not mess with the textures, or keep it monochromatic and play with the surfaces. In this example, the textured concrete brings in different shades of grey and is accompanied by a dark floor and simple yet elegant draping curtains. The sofa and pillows match the colors of the floor and curtains, completing the overall look.

Curtains for grey walls
Soft grey curtains with textured walls

Greige curtains and greige walls

Did we say the monochromatic design solutions are extremely popular now? We will most likely repeat this some times again because they indeed are! This room offers you curtains that are textured, but the color that matches that one of the walls does not allow this texture to stand out. Such solid curtains take quite much attention on themselves, that is why the furniture and the decoration should be kept simple and not stand out.

Brown sofa with white curtains and grey walls

Brown sofa – whether it’s in textile or leather – is a classic design solution that works well in different interiors. In this example, we see how quite dense grey walls together with uplifting white sheer curtains create a great background to the classic furniture ensemble with the sofa in the lead.

Curtains for grey walls

Creme colored curtains with dove drey walls

Even though the density of the grey on the walls is quite different, there is some resemblance between this look and the previous one – the curtains are used ceiling to floor for stretching the space upwards and are supported by soft grey walls, and the two of them together create an optimal background to almost any design.

Curtains for grey walls

A room in blue, grey, and white

As you know, the design is more complex than just matching the colors and it is not just the curtains and walls that should work together well. Here we prepared for you an example of the bedroom colored in blue, grey, and white – not just the walls and drapes, but also the bed, the sheets, the bedside tables, and even the armchair. This case may be specific due to the elaborate print used for the bed and the drapes (and as you may have noticed, it is the same for both), and such prints are hard to combine with other interior elements, however since these three cool colors work great together, the room does not look overloaded.

Curtains foe grey walls
A room in blue, grey, and white

Beige curtains with dark greige walls

Or vice versa! There are no strict rules in design as long as it resembles your vision and makes you feel exactly the way you want to feel. This room is a perfect representation of classic style, with some “light” elements in white color and “heavy” decorations in metal. Combined, they make a perfectly balanced elegant, and comfortable room.

Curtains foe grey walls
Beige curtains with dark greige walls

Charcoal grey curtains with light grey walls

The thick material of the curtains in this example makes the texture stand out, thus taking almost all the room from the walls and making them look almost colorless. Such curtains are indeed a solid interior design element and do require simplicity from the other elements in the same room.

Curtains for grey walls
Charcoal grey curtains with light grey walls

Summing it all up, when you look for the curtains that go with gray walls, think first about the feeling that you want to bring up for a person in the room. Whites, greys, and beiges are simple colors that make it very simple to keep things neutral. However, if you are going for a more lively vibe and have set your eyes on some bright colored curtains, remember that the light, the surface behind the curtain, the thickness of the material – these are the factors that will influence the color of your curtains constantly, making them change and vary.

That is why, before making the last decision we strongly suggest you check the colors out in different lighting and on different materials before making your final choice. In any case, there is no need to fret about what color curtains go with gray walls too much – take the one you like, try it, and if it did not work for your room, take another one and try again.

Do not rush to get down to business until you are sure that you have all the necessary tools available. If you choose to work with steel studs, it means that some of the tools on the list will be very specific. If you don’t have them in stock, don’t panic. There are special stores where you can rent these tools. Here is a complete list of what you will need during construction:

  • Clamps;
  • Laser level;
  • Chalk box;
  • Fasteners;
  • Screw gun;
  • Hammer drill;
  • Level;
  • Metal cut-on saw.

How Many Metal Studs For Outdoor Kitchen Do You Need

Now that we have prepared the necessary drawing and purchased all the tools we need, we need to decide on the number of metal studs that we will need to build your open kitchen. Contractors recommend using one metal stud per twelve inches, especially when you are putting up walls. Don’t forget that you will need steel plates. They are used for the lower and upper parts in the kitchen design.

Draw Lines With Chalk

Chalk is useful to us in order to choose where each item of furniture you plan will go or a metal hairpin. If you are going to build on the floor, you can chalk out the area you are using. Markup is very important, and you will appreciate its usefulness when you start working on it. It is much more convenient and there is a higher chance that you will do everything correctly.

Screw In the Tracks

bbq island plans pdf

If you look in any guide to building an outdoor kitchen metal frame, you will notice that everyone recommends starting by screwing down the bottom tracks. Follow exactly the chalk lines that you drew to mark the future kitchen, place the lower tracks. You need them in order to maintain the weight of the project during the entire construction process. Next, turn on the drill and drill holes: one in the metal stud, the other in the track. Fix this hole with a screw as tightly as possible. If you have a concrete surface at your disposal, then you will make your work easier if you use a regular puncher. It will save you a lot of time.

When you put the track, make sure that all the long lines and corners are exactly aligned with the markup. If necessary, correct any errors. Align the side flange to allow the overlap to easily fall into place. This is very important for the correct overlap of all corners. If you use longer tracks, you should block them at least six inches. When everything is installed, secure the resulting structure with a concrete screw to press it more firmly to the floor. So you will definitely get a reliable design and cannot worry about its strength.

Plumb the First Track

The upper and lower tracks are the most important part of the entire structure of outdoor kitchen steel framing. They must be vertical, so you cannot do without a laser level. If you use it, place the laser level in the lower middle of the track. Many contractors recommend using the laser level in all similar procedures, its use is quite simple and it effectively shows itself in construction. The Plumb line works on a similar principle.

Trim the Steel Studs

metal studs for outdoor kitchen

We continue to build the open kitchen of our dreams and the next step is to adjust all the metal studs. How do I do this? Take one flange of a metal stud and bend it up, cut it off at the bend with special scissors. If your kitchen project will include plumbing or electronics, cut off all the metal studs on one side. Remember that safety is an important thing in this class, so do not forget to wear protective gloves to protect your hands from injury.

If you need to cut several pieces at the same time, then a miter saw with a metal cutting blade is perfect for this task. There is another available option that will make it easier for you to cut off the metal studs. To start, score them with a knife on the front and back sides. Then bend it back and forth until the metal stud snaps.

To Attach Metal Studs To The Tracks

outdoor kitchen metal frame

Use the C-clip pliers to attach the metal studs to the tracks. Use medium speed to insert the number eight pallet head screw in the middle. The screw should not measure less than half an inch. But even here, a small problem may stand in our way. You should use a clutch installation that can guide the screw to where it should be, but not with enough force to clean the hole, otherwise, you risk getting a weak connection to the structure.

Make Some Metal Headers

outdoor kitchen metal frame

If you plan to install equipment or furniture of a non-standard shape, this step is necessary. Cut the path a couple of inches more than the width of the hole you made. It is important that the length of each flange does not exceed one inch. When you have complied with all the sizes, fold the fabric ninety degrees and down by means of pliers. Perfect for those that are made of sheet metal, they are also called fixing.

Pour Concrete

how to build a bbq island with steel studs

Carefully consider what kind of kitchen you want to get at the end of the work and whether you should strengthen it properly. To do this, you will use concrete. It needs to be poured into the outer kitchen steel frame. So you will be one hundred percent sure that the kitchen will serve you for many years and will not be destroyed. If you don’t want to fill it, you can use concrete panels. If you do not have a lot of financial resources, you can buy wooden panels. This option is less stable, but it is economical.

Pull the Electrical Cables

how to build a bbq island with steel studs

Whether you decide to do this right now or put it off for later, you will still need to run several electrical cables through your structure. To do this, you should carefully look at the drawing that you prepared before the construction work began. The plastic sleeve that fits into each knockout can be very useful because it will save the cable from rubbing against the sharp edges of the metal. We recommend using plastic ties that are screwed to metal studs to get the best result.

Wood Blocking

how to build a bbq island with steel studs

If there are any spaces that are not closed yet, you can close them using wooden blocks. Perhaps some of the walls will remain uncovered, or you just want everything to look new. In any case, whatever you decide, wooden locks will do this task best.

Add Counters and Veneers

outdoor kitchen steel framing

So we got to the actual last step of our guide to building an open kitchen with metal studs, and this step will be adding countertops and veneer. Many people choose granite counters, as they have an amazing strength. In the end, you can use any veneer you like: tile, stone, plaster, or combine several options. Remember the main rule: use only strong materials, as your kitchen is constantly outdoors under the influence of various weather conditions.

Take Сare Of Your New Outdoor Kitchen

outdoor kitchen steel framing

After that, you can install all the hardware you want. Ready, you can enjoy your brand new outdoor kitchen. But this is not the end of your work. You will need to take preventive measures to make the kitchen happy for a long time. For example, if you used wood for construction, you should cover it with high-quality wood paint, so that the material will serve you for a long time. You have plenty of options for your outdoor kitchen: you can place a grill, a roaster, assemble a wood-burning pizza oven, a smokehouse, and much more. It all depends on the place you marked and your imagination. If you have children, you can place some playsets nearby so that they can have something to do while you cook a delicious meal.

How To Build A BBQ Island With Steel Studs

metal studs for outdoor kitchen

After all, learning how to build a street kitchen with metal studs is not as difficult as it seems at first glance. However, this takes a large amount of your time, and here, too, much depends on your initial idea. For this reason, many people prefer not to engage in the construction process themselves and hire a contractor or buy a ready-made street kitchen. But this option will not be able to compare with a deep pride in their work, because the kitchen, built with their own hands, brings more satisfaction.

What Is the Average Size of a Coffee Table?

What does “the average size of a coffee table” stand for?

There are plenty of ways for you to decorate your room and bring up all its best qualities. It is indeed a tough choice when it comes to the living room – while often being the most spacious place in the house, it is also multifunctional, and all the elements should support every one of the functions separately and together. A coffee table can become just the perfect decision if you have an empty stop in the room to cover and have trouble with maintaining the right balance of the furniture and free space in the room.

Choosing a thing as “trivial” as a coffee table should not be that hard, however finding the perfect fit for your room might consume quite some time and effort. What style should the table be to complete the room design? What is the standard coffee table size that you should look for in your search? What design rules to follow in terms of shapes, colors, edges? See, standard coffee table dimensions play one of the key roles here.

Average coffee table sizes 7
Coffee table with storage

Here’s a little hint for you to bear in mind before we dig into details. For a coffee table to be comfortable to get around, it should have about 16 inches of space surrounding it. Average coffee table sizes come with a width of 18 to 24 inches and a length of 36 to 48 inches. When you place a coffee table in front of a couch or on a carpet, ideally it should not take up more than 2/3 of its width. The good coffee table is not higher than a seat of the couch cushions next to it; it would be even better if they fall an inch or two below that level.

Have we told yet how well a coffee table can play out in the living room? If you think it through well enough and make your choice with the help of thorough analysis, not as a spur-of-a-moment whim, you will find a neat complement to the other objects in the room, an astonishing piece of furniture on its own and a great conversation piece. Such a table can make you feel at home, support you in different gatherings, and bring all the people together around it.

Coffee table in Charming and Effortless Chic styles

Decorating a room with a coffee table that you found, evaluated, and picked is a great way to show your sense of style and flair and donate a part of yourself to the house. It is thanks to its flexibility by design that coffee tables are often chosen as a finishing touch to the look of the room. They offer more space to put the beverages on that a side table, can store books and magazines, all displayed beautifully, or provide additional shelving for the stuff that is not for the display.

When you dig into the coffee tables styles and designs, you would find that the vast majority of them falls into the three categories:

  1. Modern style. These tables come with open shelving, swiveling parts, secret compartments, and often have architectural details in natural materials, like wood, stone, or glass, or a combination of several.
  2. Classic mid-century style. Such tables are available in highly polished wood and often give the note of magnitude.
  3. Industrial style. The tables of this style come in all shapes and sizes and will add a unique touch to the place.
Average coffee table sizes 6
Round coffee table

The right style for you always correlates with the overall style of the living room. It can be organic, round, square, rectangular, ottoman-style, but should go well with the rest of the furniture]. That said, if the room style has edgy points in it, a round table is quite unlikely to work out well in it (unless you want to put a strong geometrical accent on this piece). We should not forget about the decorations too: make sure that the books, flowers, lighting, sculptures and other objects coexist peacefully with the table and look natural next to it. If you are a lucky owner of a pet, take the nuances of your animal’s behavior, temper, weight, and size into account too.

Whether you have selected vintage of a modern table of glass and steel, have your measuring tape ready, because now we are moving to the measurement – the utmost important part of the procedure of picking up a coffee table. You can make some preparations before your search and take the measurements of your couch, or sitting, or carpet, next to which the table is to be placed.

How do I choose the size of my coffee table?

We get it, the process may seem slightly overwhelming and putting a decent portion of pressure on your shoulders. However, do not worry, there are always some loopholes you can use to back you up in unpredictable situations.

For instance, if you do not feel good about the measurements of the free space that you took and now are concerned that your perfect table would be impossible to move around even if having all the perfectly calculated coffee table measurements, consider taking a round table of the one that is adjustable to the different spaces. These shapes visually increase the flow and make the unoccupied area look bigger than it is. The very same way square or rectangular tables fit perfectly to medium and large rooms, taking with their angles just the right amount of space. These two types are also good storage facilities since they are perfect to put a hidden drawer or shelving in.

Remember the tip at the beginning of the article for the coffee table not to be as high as sitting next to it? Let’s elaborate on that a bit. According to the rules of interior design, a coffee table must be no more than 4 inches higher than a couch or sofa cushion’s seat. Practice shows, it is way easier and comfortable to have one that is the same level or slightly shorter than the sitting. The coffee table must never overpower the couch or be higher than the main furniture; remember, it is a finishing touch, not the last destroying chord. On the contrary, a side table is always standing higher than the couch for the sake of easy access.

An average coffee table size can fall into 21 inches in width or length, but also larger pieces can be found, which is a common phenomenon for odd shapes and custom pieces. The height of a coffee table usually is around 18 inches, or shrink down to 16 inches (other variations are also possible, however less spread). Remember, that it is always the composition of aesthetic treatment, style, and material together that dictates the final coffee table dimensions design.

How wide an average coffee table should be?

Planning to put a coffee table in the room, do not prepare to occupy too much room; in the case of this piece of furniture, smaller is often a better choice than bigger. The average length of a coffee table varies between 36 and 48 inches, but surely you can have it higher (or lower). As we mentioned in the beginning, the table should not be longer than 2/3 of your couch’s length to not take upon itself all the attention. For an extended sofa, it is approved to have a coffee table longer than average, around 56 inches or longer. As for the average width, it stands at 18 inches (though variations are possible). We strongly recommend you to ensure that you have 12 to 18 inches left between your sofa and the table to move freely around it.

How high an average coffee table should be?

So, what is the average height of a coffee table? The height of a coffee table greatly depends on the sitting that it stands next to. Most couches’ seating is around 18 inches high, thus it is preferable for the coffee table either to hit the 18-inch limit sharp, or be shorter for 1-2 inches. As a rule, a coffee table does not exceed 18 inches in height, but you can always custom it up to your preferences.

Average coffee table sizes 8

Is the height of a coffee table adjustable?

It is a common request – to adjust the coffee table height – due to the change of furniture placement in the room most often. The easiest way to change the height of your coffee table is to use risers or spacers on its feet.

Some coffee table makers take care of this issue for you and provide adjustable legs using pegs. Others address the adjusting problem through the construction with the usage of a combination of leaves that can be extended or retracted to change the width and the area occupied.

If your table is not adjustable in height by any means and you only need to make it the tiniest bit higher, you can place a thick piece of glass on top of the table (please make sure it matches perfectly the shape of the original top of the table).

How do I place my perfectly measured coffee table?

As you know now, the coffee table is a finishing touch; that said, it comes last – after the main furniture, the paint color choice and wallpaper placement, lighting set, sitting places adjustment. A coffee table is the most flexible part of the furniture, so choose it wisely; it should fit the room in different layout and furniture placements. A properly chosen coffee table will become your best friend, that will always be there for you and your family members, and all the visitors, to hold your cups, offer you a nice journal to kill a minute or two, help you out on the account of storage, and would always find a way to surprise you with a new way it can contribute to your life.

Average coffee table sizes 10
Wooden coffee table

Summing it up, average coffee table dimensions usually meet 36-48 inches in length, 18 inches in width, and 18 inches in height; however, you can always have each of them adjusted. We have talked a lot about how do you make indeed the best choice for you and how important it is, and it may feel overwhelming, to have such a huge responsibility on your shoulders, especially if you are going through the process right now.

However do not fret – there are so many different coffee tables in the world, big and small, thick and thin, long and short, of all shapes, colors, and sizes, that you have absolutely no chance of not finding your one and only one among them. Even if you do not, by chance, succeed, there’s always a possibility to hire professionals to create a tailor-made table, one of a kind and just for you.

Hanging Curtains Without Nails

Taking care of the interior design, trying to perform it with taste and a sense of style, we cannot forget about adequate decoration and interior decoration of Windows. It should suit our climate and the nature of the interior. This is not difficult, especially since today we have a wide range of solutions that allow us to implement many ideas. It is only important to use them skillfully.

You have moved to the best new place for you and want to turn it into something amazing. But you have no desire to ruin the walls by driving nails into them to hang curtains. Do you think: is there any way to hang curtain rods without nails? We have studied all possible methods especially for you, so after reading this article you will have full information about it.

There are a small number of options for how to hang curtains without using nails or screws:

  • Tension rods are the lightest of all available options. Just buy them, hang the curtain on the rods, and carefully place them between the window frames.
  • Magnetic eaves are also easy to use. We will tell you more about them later.
  • Command hooks can also work for you. You just have to stick them to your wall. This is the best way if you like the curtains to be framed.
  • Special brackets that do not require drilling into the wall.
  • Just use Velcro.

We will study each of these options in detail, describe the steps to use them in detail, and tell you what you will need. In this article, you will get a comprehensive answer to the question: how to hang curtains without nails?

Hanging Curtains Without Nails

hanging curtains without nails

When you want to know how to hang a curtain rod without a drill, you can use one of these options.

Tension Rods

curtain rods without nails

In our opinion, the most affordable way how to hang curtains without a drill is to buy a tension rod. In the past, such rods were flimsy, but modern technology has significantly improved them. Today you can find curtain rods without drilling in any style that appeals to you and choose the perfect option for your decor, whatever it may be. They are very easy to apply. You just need to move the curtain and then put it in place in your window.

The rod has one drawback: if you have a desire to hang a curtain behind the window frame, it is unlikely to be suitable for this purpose. But do not despair, there will be more options below, including those for your preferences.

Magnetic Curtain Rods

hang curtains without drilling

Magnetic rods are relatively new to the general market, but they have become an ideal option for those who have side Windows in the house or Windows in the door, where it is clearly superfluous to drill holes, as this will spoil the overall appearance. They may not always withstand very heavy types of curtains, but if you bought light and simple curtains and are looking for an easier way to hang them without compromising your home, we recommend that you try magnetic curtain rods. The receiving end of the magnet is attached to the wall with a special glue that resembles a command hook.

Hang Curtains With Command Hooks

how to hang curtains without a rod

Of course, you know how to hang curtains over blinds without nails. Command hooks are increasingly coming into use and are becoming common for hanging curtains without nails. They exist in a wide range of sizes, they are very easy to hang, they do not harm your wall or paint and cost quite acceptable. They are also made to be easy to remove. The main problem here is to choose the right size of hooks so that they hold the rod and curtain well at the same time.

Hooks are even made specifically with the use of metallic color so that they look great with modern rods. Therefore, nails are slowly losing their relevance for decorators.

They can be used not only for curtains. Cornices will be useful for hanging towels in the bathroom, in this case, you also do not have to drill the walls.

Different hooks have their own weight restrictions that are worth considering. Many of them can hold a weight of up to four pounds, if you take two, respectively, you can hang a weight of eight pounds on them. If you choose large metal hooks, then one of them can withstand five pounds, respectively, two will withstand a weight of up to ten pounds.

You can choose tension rods that hold up to two pounds of weight, and choose lighter curtains for them. Just do not forget to check the weight of curtains and hooks when buying both, and then you will not make a mistake.

If you want to purchase hooks that will hold heavy curtains, you should look at heavy-duty hooks that can hold up to eight pounds of weight. However, they only come in white, so if you are scrupulous in terms of design, you will have to repaint them to match the color of curtains or walls.

Hooks should be fixed on the wall so that the curtains lay flounces. Special loops are made on the fabric, which are then threaded into hooks. You can attach the hooks at the same interval, or randomly. This will help to hang the fabric on the Windows in an unusual way. If the opening is arched style, then it is better to fasten future curtains in a semicircle.

Hang Curtains Without Drilling

how to hang a curtain rod without a drill

Another option for a suspension system that will do without nails is a special bracket without a drill. There are many brands that produce curtain rods that fall into place behind the trim that is around your window. Unfortunately, they are useless on door Windows or any other that do not have wood trim.

These brackets are equipped with small pins, which you carefully press into place behind your window frame with a hammer. When you move in, you can simply pull them out and there will be no trace of them on the wall.

The main advantage of this type of brackets is that they are able to hold a weight of up to 20 pounds, which gives you more room for imagination when choosing curtains for any of the rooms in the house.

How to Hang Curtains Without a Rod

hang curtains without holes

Another interesting option how to hang curtains without drilling this is Velcro. This is a great solution to your problem with placing curtains if you plan to never open the curtains in this room. For example, you have a window in your house that you want to shield completely from sunlight to preserve a little privacy. This option is very relevant for the bathroom in the house. In this case, the Velcro will be your assistant in this case. You just need to glue the receiving side to the wall, and attach the connecting side to the top of your curtain, and then just connect the two parts.

Velcro can be used in other ways: for example, to hang a simple Roman lampshade on the window. In this case, you will be able to open and close access to the light in your room. The installation process looks exactly the same as for the fixed version.

This type of curtains is characterized by ease of installation, low consumption of fabric. They are suitable for a window opening of any size. They have different light transmittance, pattern can be patterned or plain. And rolled up in a cassette, a rolled curtain, will not limit the opening of the window.

Mounting options:

  • on the sash of the window. The window sill will remain free, and the functionality of the window will remain the same. The only drawback is that the curtain is hanging closed. Easy to fix with the help of magnets;
  • on the frame. A great option if flowers are grown on the windowsill. Even if the curtain is closed, the window sill will be free. And with front airing – there will be no difficulties;
  • above the window opening. It is suitable if you need to visually enlarge the window opening or hide the slopes;
  • at the ceiling. Use when you need to close the entire wall or Windows located next to it.

There are a lot of cool Velcros to carry out your plan. When you remove them, use a small amount of citrus cleaner to safely dissolve the dried glue.

Hang Curtains Without Holes

curtain rods without nails

The best option to hang curtains without damage to the walls is to select alternatives without nails. Most of these options assume that you will choose light curtains because not all of the methods listed above will be able to withstand heavy curtains. There are many options for which curtains to buy so that they can create a private atmosphere without damaging your wall.

If you choose one of the options that we have suggested in this article, you will not even need to use a drill. All you need is a tape measure and a pen to check everything properly before you put it in. Finding these tools is so easy that you can go and hang curtains right now after reading this article. Of course, if you have already purchased one of our recommended items.

There are situations in which it is simply impossible to hang curtains without a rod. And this:

  • If curtains that reach the floor are used
  • When the curtains are made of very heavy fabric
  • If the curtains have to move apart.

It is very important to consider the style of the room. If it is made in a classic style, then it is best suited to heavy curtains and curtains. But fans of minimalism will definitely appreciate the advantages of roller blinds. For a kitchen in the style of Provence, curtains on a thread are suitable, and fans of the loft can afford anything. The main thing is that everything looks harmonious. We hope that the secret of how to hang curtains without a cornice is revealed!

How to Unclog a Double Kitchen Sink With Standing Water

It comes as no surprise that every home finds its heart in the kitchen. It is the kitchen that keeps your family warm and fed, the one that gathers everyone together for wonderful chaotic preparation of holiday dinners, and that brings together the two for the lazy coffee in the weekend morning. It is decorated and maintained with special love and attention not only due to its key role in the home mood creation but also because it is the kitchen that supports life in your house. The place needs an extra attentive approach also due to its sensitivity and a need to be kept free from bacteria, viruses, and different contaminants. This is why a double sink clogged is not only an annoying inconvenience but it also possesses quite a threat to the overall house ecosystem safety and safety of its inhabitants. With water backing up in the sink and attracting various kinds of microbes, it is a definite health hazard. This is why the question “how to unclog a kitchen sink drain with standing water” is quite common.

The good news is, no matter the damage scale, with the right strategy (and a few tricks) is it easy to cleanse a sink clogged on both sides and have your kitchen crystal clear in no time. But before we rush to the action, let’s take a moment to look through some agents who can cause your kitchen sink clogged both sides.

What makes my sink clog?

  1. Food waste. Even if your food disposal is located right under the sink, don’t let it fool you. Food waste thrown into the sink is the shortest cut to clogging. Most food particles, especially big ones, don’t dissolve easily, thus quickly resulting in a clogged drain. We highly recommend you to scrape the dishes and utensils clean of excess food before proceeding with doing the dishes.
  2. Grease and Oils. While not possessing a solid form to cause a blockage, fats, oils, and grease are known for reducing the sink’s draining capacity, especially during the cleaning with cold water. Accumulated on the tube sides and getting built up over time, they can be a pain to clear, but this is not an invincible obstacle.
  3. Mineral Buildup. Mineral buildup is one of the most difficult to remove causes of blockage. It is a common phenomenon for the areas with hard water. The minerals residues tend to build up and gradually yet steadily reduce draining capacity that ends up with a full clog. It is recommended to have a plumber on a standby to address this issue if you are living in the area with a high risk of such blockage since the removal of such blockage requires professional tools and special knowledge.
  4. Small Objects. They can be a real pain in the neck when getting into the hands of a small kid or slipping from your hands right into the kitchen sink. Rings, earrings, coins, paperclips can cause a clog more serious than you can imagine, so you should act fast to prevent it. We recommend you take off the jewelry that tends to slip off before you get to do the dishes, or make sure the accessories you wear are a perfect match to your size and will not let you down in the crucial moment.

How to unclog a double sink

How to unclog a double kitchen sink?

Now that we know the main culprits by names and have an impression of what kind of damage they may cause, we can get down to business and discuss the sets of actions that you can take to deal with the blockage and answer the question “how to unclog a double sink”. We prepared for you some proven ways how to unclog a kitchen sink with standing water and make the process easy and flawless.

Hot or boiling water

This method by far is the simplest and least expensive solution to apply, which also makes it the most popular one. Boiling water works well with grease and fat residue melting them away. If you are aware that it is the exact cause of the blockage, your troubles should end here.

However, there may occur the situation with water coming back up the kitchen sink and make it impossible to get boiling water down the pipes. This is your glory hour to improvise and find a way to remove the standing water. (You can use a small bucket, pot, mug, or anything else lying around that you find suitable for such a mission.)

Once you have removed the dirty water from the backed-up sink, you can proceed with pouring hot water, but make sure it drains gradually. It is recommended to pour the water in small amounts to prevent it from building up. Please take into account that the process may be time-consuming and may require to be repeated to completely get rid of all the oil and grease that may have built up.

Use a plunger

Since it is common for double sinks to have a garbage disposal on one side, the second thing that can help you to drain the floating water is a kitchen plunger. If you are not aware of its operation principle, do not worry, the process is rather simple. First, you should make sure to plug one side of the disposal clogged double sink (preferable the one with the garbage disposal unit). Then use the plunger on the other sink repeatedly without break: keep the plunger in an upright position and pump it hard 10 to 15 times. This should clear any of the food remains in the sink. We strongly advise you to close off the drain on the other side to keep it away from creating a mess.

The second step depends on the outcome of the first one. If the clog does not drain, try to reverse the process and switch the sinks: plunge the second side while plugging the side that you initially plunged. In this process, the aim is to create pressure with the plunger to retract small particles or residues from the pipes. If the process is a success and water starts to drain, we advise you to run boiling water down the system to eliminate the grease residues and polish the pipes.

Remove and check the trap

This strategy requires a little preparation:

  1. Clear out the kitchen sink cabinet and place a bucket beneath the pipes. It is needed to keep the area nice and clean by keeping inside the water that is usually held up in the unit. It can be helpful to use a wrench to help you loosen the pipe as you ease it off.
  2. Remove the pipe and inspect it for particles or debris. You can use a wire coat hanger or a plumber’s snake to remove it. Sometimes a clogged pipe can have a thick mass of clogged material that is impossible to remove by a plunger. If this is the case, take the trap outside to the cleaning area to wash it up thoroughly. No debris or any other particles should be left stuck. Otherwise, the remains would be a basis for the new clog very soon.
  3. Once the trap is clean, it should be returned to the sink drainage system. Once it is ready, run water several times to confirm that the drainage problem has been solved. If after five minutes the drainage works perfectly, our congratulations – you have successfully passed the mission “plumb your faulty kitchen drainage system”!

Baking soda and vinegar

Ever heard about this magic potion? It brings amazing results that are praised in the stories carried through generations. Follow us, and we’ll show you a whole new world of household magic.

The recipe is quite simple, so do not fret if you skipped your chemistry classes in school. First, take 1/3 cup of baking soda and place it on a limited surface, preferably a dish. Add an equal portion of vinegar to the same dish, and you will see the mixture fizzing immediately. It is your cue to pour it down the drain without any delay! Please remember to treat the substance with caution and do not let it close to your face and especially eyes. See, the fizzing action is, in fact, the cleansing agent that can help to clean almost everything – from grime to grease and residue. The more of the reaction takes place inside the pipe, the higher the efficiency is.

Then, let the mixture stay for some time. 15 minutes to an hour will do, but if you have an opportunity, it is even better to let it sit overnight to ensure it reached all the residues in your sink.

Another way to perform this magic ritual is to skip the mixing-on-the-dish part and start by placing a large quantity of baking soda directly in the sink and following it up by an equal portion of vinegar. In this case, the mixture, again, will fizz immediately. Remember that to let the soda work, it should be applied directly to the drain, thus no standing water should be in the sink when you start the procedure.

Once the mixture has properly settled, the drain is to be cleaned with running hot water that leaves your sink fully functional again. This strategy may seem doubtful, especially trying the mixture for the first time, however, on practice, it is found to be as effective as most drain cleaners.

Salt and baking soda

If the previous part got you worried if you have vinegar, do not fret, salt can be just as good an anti-clog agent as vinegar. Place approximately 1/2 cup of salt in a dish, then mix it with a cup of baking soda. Next, you pour the mixture down the drain and let it sit for about 4-6 hours. Remember that there must be no standing water in the sink!

Once the mixture has settled and has had several hours to work properly, flush it with some hot water. Depending on the severity of the blockage, the efficiency of the strategy may vary. Thus, do not hesitate to repeat it one or several times until the desired result is achieved. This method is proven to be perfect for dealing with grease and oil clogs.

Another way to use the same ingredients in the “magic potion” is to mix boiling water with salt for several minutes, apply it to the drain and let it sit for some time. Salt has proved itself as a good unclogging element, especially when being dissolved in hot water: it removes grease and fat, cleanses, and polishes the pipes allowing them to function normally again.

A little tip: we suggest you to always consider salt and baking soda whenever the plunger fails. However, it is to be taken into account that the method works best only when allowed to settle for a significant amount of time, from several minutes to hours. If you can make it through the day without using the clogged sink and can afford to leave it with the unclogging mixture for the entire period, we strongly recommend you to do so.

Plumber’s snake

Back to the part about the trap (see “Remove and check the trap”). Imagine the following picture: you went to all the trouble, prepared the area, and removed the P-trap, trying to clean it up. However, the clog is located further in the system and out of your reach, leaving all your efforts unsuccessful. Frustrating, isn’t it? It is the right case for such an instrument as a plumber’s snake. If you have it within your reach, far-sitting clogs are no longer a problem.

Being created specifically for these occasions, the plumber’s snake (or drain snake) helps you access the areas that a wire coat hanger cannot reach. If such clogs are a common occasion for you, we strongly recommend buying this tool from your local hardware store to have it handy at any time.

Plumber snake is pretty easy to operate and we are sure you will easily find your way around. Once you are done with the snake, set up the trap back again and run some hot water to clean up the system from residues of grease, fat, or oil that might have remained. After that, you can run the faucet to check the results of your DIY plumbing. If you did a thorough job with the plumber’s snake, the sink should drain.

Reset garbage disposal

Another reason for the kitchen blockage besides those that we discussed can be your garbage disposal backing up into the sink. If your problem at this point sounds like “how to unclog a garbage disposal with standing water”, here’s what you do: the first thing in this situation is to locate the garbage disposal system from under your clogged sink.

Try to press the reset button several times to see if it’s enough to solve your drainage problems. This strategy can work, however, no worries if it’s still not draining – the next option is to use an Allen wrench and turn the center crank in a clockwise direction to loosen the blades and thus alleviate any blockage.

It is strongly advised to use a plumber’s snake on the kitchen drain afterward to ensure full lifting of the blockage. Once you have reset the garbage disposal, run the faucet to make sure that the sink is fully fixed.

Try a coat hanger

As handy as it is, a plumber’s snake is not a common tool to have at home available at any time. If you do not possess this wonder of household wizardry, a wire coat can play a good substitute! While it is not designed for such purpose and may lack some flexibility to reach the clogs that sit way too deep in the system, it still can help unclog some of them and clear out your sink.

How do I prevent recurring blockage?

As we already said in the beginning, keeping food waste away from the sink and preventing it from entering the drain is the surest way to keep your sink fully functional. Even though it can be a pain in the neck to clean all the small particles from the plate before placing it in the sink, try your best to clean up and throw waste in the garbage to save yourself some time and trouble on clearing the clogs later.

After a heavy supper with a greasy meal and/or oily dessert clean the plates with a paper towel. It takes only several seconds, but also it does prevent grease and oils from building up in the drainage system, especially if you prefer using cold water when doing dishes.

Once you are done with the dishes, we strongly advise you to run some hot water to reduce the buildup of grease and fat. Mixing hot water with salt and pouring it down to let sit for some time after you have done the dishes can be your everyday practice that keeps your sink free from clogs and doesn’t take much effort. It is a perfect “good night” procedure for your sink that would pay you off.

If you found yourself living in a hard water area, you can get a softener for the sink that would: first, prevent mineral deposits from building up and saving you the trouble to call a plumber to remove them, second, increase the overall lifespan of your drainage pipes. Hard water does not seem as much of a threat to the pipes, the people using it, which is a mistake that can result not only in clogging of the system but also in an adverse effect on the skin, especially a sensitive one.

What should I do if my drain smells bad?

Clogs are often accompanied by unpleasant smells from the sink drains; however, the smell can occur on its own, even before the clog is formed. A little organic buildup in the pipes is all it takes to make your kitchen routine way less pleasant and more complex.

The strategy is not too different from the unclogging ones: put a stopper plug on your drain and fill the sink with hot salty water. Then, pour in some dish soap and stir until it completely dissolves. If the smell is strong, consider adding a cut lemon (or some lemon juice) to the mixture; lemon is one of the strongest agents against unpleasant smell. Do not forget to remove the stopper once the potion is ready so that it can move down the pipes. The sink should be rinsed off with pure hot water once the procedure is done.

Should I consider hiring a professional?

A kitchen sink backing up on both sides is not a problem you cannot deal with on your own. As complex as it seems, most people intuitively know how to unclog double kitchen sink with only a few directives given. However, if you do not feel confident about it, if you have doubts about the strategies we presented, if you have difficulties removing a trap or any other necessary part, if you are allergic to any of the substances used, it is strongly recommended to call a professional who would fix your sink for you in no time. It is also the right thing to do in case of the recurring clog after a successful (or unsuccessful) attempt to unblock it on your own.

All About Roaches in Kitchen Cabinets

Picture of a roach

Cockroaches belong to the order of insects called Blattodea and appeared on this planet long before the appearance of our species. More than one ecosystem has changed in the history of our Earth, but cockroaches remain the same species. They evolve and continue to survive in any, even the most whimsical environment, because survival is embedded in their DNA.

There are about five thousand different types of cockroaches that have been found by scientists, and of all this diversity, only 25 come to our homes and start causing us problems. See photos of these roaches on the Internet. In the United States, there are about five species that are becoming a serious problem for private homes and production, because they have become virtually domestic. They have not just adapted to the inconspicuous life around us and learned to survive so that we do not notice them immediately, but have become completely dependent on life in our homes.

During a certain period of time, all cockroaches lived exclusively in the open air and survived with the help of water in its various manifestations, feeding on plants and natural substances. But civilization has developed rapidly, we have occupied a large territory where we keep delicious food, have water supply and other attractive items. Cockroaches, when they first entered our territory, realized that being near us, they will be much easier to get food, water and a warm place to live. This is what they need for comfortable survival in the modern world. It was the right choice to settle in our homes, rather than fight for life in the inhospitable conditions of the wild.

More often in our homes settle the following three types of cockroaches: American cockroach, brown striped cockroach and German cockroach. Picture of a roach will help you distinguish them from each other. The main problem is that they come to you from quite dirty places. Before your home, they regularly ate from trash cans, drank water from sewers, and lived in other dirty places. They lived in conditions of complete unsanitary conditions, and on their small paws they brought a lot of microbes that settle on our kitchen utensils and settle on food. That is why you should not take lightly the fact that such neighbors have settled in your house, because you are at risk of serious diseases that can lead to disastrous consequences for the human body.

Homes, catering establishments, grocery stores – all those places where food is located, can become a new home for cockroaches. In these buildings, they can eat for a long time from a buffet of the products that you store. They can consume crumbs, fats, and other delicious things to survive and reproduce. The more hidden places in the room, such as kitchen cabinets, the more opportunities they have to hide from your eyes for a long time and build their nests. When there are many nests, the cockroach population grows at a tremendous rate.

Armed with this information, do not forget to regularly clean your home and clean your kitchen cabinets, regularly remove all greasy spots and crumbs, do not clutter the kitchen cabinets with excessive amounts of dishes and other kitchen utensils, store food in carefully packed form.

How to Avoid Cockroaches in Kitchen Cabinets

How to Avoid Cockroaches in Kitchen Cabinets

We want to warn you right away: kitchen cabinets are not the only place where cockroaches can hide from you. When your home is infected with cockroaches, it is infected completely, not just in the kitchen. Kitchen cabinets are often just the main place where insects live, but it is worth examining the other corners, which correspond to the approximate place of residence of harmful parasites.

  1. Start by putting everything in order and completely disinfecting all kitchen cabinets

It is important to remove cabinet after cabinet carefully, without missing a single corner. This may take a long time, but don’t skimp on it: complete disinfection is very important. You may be surprised how many greasy spots, food leftovers, crumbs, and other harmful debris can accumulate in your cabinets over time. Clean each shelf, eliminating all crumbs and stains in your way. Sometimes it takes half your day off, but it’s necessary. You should also get rid of all food that you are not going to eat or that has gone bad to prevent a repeat of the mess.

Big mess is a problem that haunts many people. You bring it on your house by buying a huge amount of food, half of which you don’t eat or even use for cooking, so it settles in the cabinets and takes up a lot of space there. Get rid of unnecessary garbage and try to buy only those foods that you are guaranteed to use as food or when cooking. You will quickly notice how the clutter in your kitchen cabinets is decreasing, and the sources of food and secret places to live for cockroaches are becoming less every day.

  1. Eliminate all secret places

Cockroaches love to live in your closets because they are dark and hidden from prying eyes. They often have a lot of invisible at first glance cracks and crevices, which they can easily penetrate and make their nest there. You can eliminate these places in a bunch of ways: seal, score, or miss with a special compound. Explore every inch of your cabinets and drawers to eliminate any damage you find. Do not limit yourself to cabinets. Carefully inspect all kitchen appliances, such as a stove or refrigerator. After all, cockroaches can hide in these places, if they have cozy cracks for their residence.

You may miss one or two cracks, but this way you will still be able to make life difficult for your unwanted cockroaches. Cockroaches will lose the place where they could hide from you and in which they are already used to living. If they remain there when sealing, you will set a great trap for them, from which they are unlikely to be able to get out. Figuratively speaking, you actually make makeshift graves for them, burying them alive in their own homes.

  1. Block the insects ‘ access to water

So, you have done away with excess food, which can be a great food for cockroaches, removed all the greasy spots and crumbs, boarded up all the cracks, but cockroaches can still survive in such conditions. This is because they still have the ability to make their way to the water.

Cockroaches live without water for seven days, you will agree that this is quite a long time. But now you know about it and this week you should do everything necessary to ensure that your home has as many dry places as possible. Deal with any problems with water in your home: fix all leaks in the water supply and dry all wet areas in the house.

What to do with kitchen sinks? After all, they are always wet. Before going to bed, dry all the sinks in the house, thoroughly wipe all the dishes, eliminate the presence of water wherever you can. So you will deprive the cockroaches of even a small sip of water.

  1. Use roaches control products and pesticides

Once you have removed all food sources for cockroaches, disinfected, and reduced the chance for insects to drink water, you can strike another blow at pests with pesticides. Do not choose the first available chemical that promises to destroy cockroaches, choose those that will give the most significant effect.

In order to eliminate the problem with cockroaches inside your cabinets, it is better to use special baits. The baits that have the best effect contain food attractants, which cockroaches will easily take for a source of food if they do not find something better. These baits kill slowly enough that the cockroaches do not immediately understand the harm of this food and were able to call the others to this dangerous feast for them. Follow images of roaches to find out which remedy is best to choose.

You also need to use a special pesticide dust, which should fill in the voids of walls, plumbing passages and other similar areas throughout your home. Dust pesticides work effectively, because even a small amount of powder may well be enough to eliminate cockroaches. Dust can get into places that other anti-cockroach tools simply can’t reach, so you need to apply it. Carefully remove the processing area from unnecessary dust, so that you do not get poisoned. Make sure that your food is securely covered during processing.

Use cockroach traps. They are important not only for eliminating insects, but also for monitoring their number in your home. In those places where there are more cockroaches, you should place more traps, with the help of them you will also be able to roughly understand where their nest is located. This will help you determine whether you are able to fix the problem by the number of cockroaches caught. Traps are a simple and non-dangerous solution to your problem.

Use a residual insecticide spray in the space around the base of the kitchen cupboard, near the sink, and over home appliances. Make sure you avoid areas where you’ve used Harris Roach tablets.

No matter how scared you are of cockroach infestation, you can get rid of them. If you follow all our instructions, you will quickly deal with the pests in your home, and your kitchen will again become your place, and not a home for cockroaches.
